City workers in the Parks and Rec Dept. finished shutting down Kiosk Park and draining the pool at Salmon Plaza in preparation for winter and as of the end of October, earlier if it should snow, city playgrounds and parks, as well as the basketball courts and the skateboard park at the Gyro on Arran and George streets will also be closed for the winter. As well, the youth hostel on the waterfront and the outdoor rink at Memorial Gardens Park on Arran St. were to be painted to spruce them up for the CBC broadcast of Hockey Day in Canada in February.

Department manager Marc Roy said at a meeting of the Community Services, Recreation an Youth Committee Sept. 22 that all in all the department had a successful summer.

He pointed out that through grants from Active Living NB, BMX bicycles and roller blades were bought to offer even more to summer camp participants. He said that over the summer, 10 different sports were offered camp goers giving them more opportunities than ever to learn new sports or activities.

He said a number of people took part in the family in-line skating that was offered every Saturday at the Oval on Dover St. from 1-7 p.m.

Roy added that the Oval would remain open well into the fall for people wanting to continue using it for walking or roller blading and would also be used for Restigouche Regional Games, along with the tennis courts on Arran St.

The always popular Kindergym is set to begin this month. It allows preschool age children the chance to make friends and take part in preschool activities in a supervised setting. As well, more activities are being sought for the Brian Theede Centre on Roseberry St. to complement its use by cadets.
