Appalachian Trail recognized
Published Wednesday September 24th, 2008

On Sept. 16, a resolution that emphasized the importance of the role of the International Appalachian Trail was adopted by the Thirty-Second Conference of the New England Governors and the Eastern Canadian Premiers. The trail runs from the southern United States into Canada along the Appalachian chain of mountains, the northern-most portion of which is in northern New Brunswick and the Gaspe.
The trail in our area runs along the railbed of the old International Railway (INR).
The resolution, numbered 32-6, which was signed by conference co-chairs Governor John E. Baldacci of Maine and Premier Shawn Graham of New Brunswick, reads as follows:
Whereas the Appalachian Trail and the International AppalachianTrail/Sentier international des Appalaches are hiking trails that connect the jurisdictions of this organization; and
Whereas these two trails allow hikers to traverse the northern extremities of the Appalachian Mountain Chain in North America; and
Whereas these two trails, and the mountain range through which they pass, serve as a cultural and physical example of the close ties between the jurisdictions represented by the New England Governors and the Eastern Canadian Premiers,
Now therefore it be resolved that the region continue to work closely with the various organizations that are developing and maintaining these trails, in order to maximize their positive impact on our tourism industry and further promote the feeling of connectiveness that exist between our respective jurisdictions.
