Moncton - Brunswick News Interactive, a division of Brunswick News, has been honoured for its work in making news content accessible each day to the blind and print-restricted in Canada.
At a recent ceremony in Fredericton, the National Broadcast Reading Service Inc. presented Daniel Mlodecki, manager of manufacturing operations with Brunswick News Inc. and general manager of Brunswick News Interactive, with a commemorative plaque celebrating the partnership in making media accessible.
Through the program, Brunswick News provides free news content from its daily newspapers, The Times & Transcript, Moncton, The Telegraph-Journal, Saint John, and The Daily Gleaner, Fredericton, to VoicePrint, Canada's broadcast reading service.
"I sincerely thank BNI for their support in helping to break down the information barrier," said John Capobianco, chair of the NBRS board of directors, at the ceremony held at the Fredericton Local Broadcast Centre.
Since 1990, VoicePrint has been broadcasting audio versions of published news and information from more than 600 publications to the more than five million vision and print-restricted Canadians who cannot independently access current published materials.
"There is nothing more important than telling the story of what's actually happening in the community," said Arlene Patterson, director of VoicePrint Operations. "That's what a community is all about. And so, with the help of BNI, VoicePrint is able to ensure people with vision and print-restrictions and others get access to the printed news and information from their communities."
"Brunswick News Interactive recognizes the importance of getting community news out to everyone," said Mlodecki. "We know that knowledge of our neighbourhoods and their concerns is what binds us together and makes our futures stronger. That is why we are delighted to use new technologies and to make our content available to VoicePrint.
"We want to ensure that people with vision and print-restrictions have full access to our news," he added. "We are proud to take a positive step to enhance their ability to remain keenly aware of important news developments."
Also present at the ceremony was Carrie Moore of Moncton, BNI national sales representative who handles the liaison with VoicePrint, a registered charity, and Edith Robb, director of community relations with Brunswick News.
