Editorial Comment | Councils must learn to co-operate
And now — or at least, after May 26, when they take office — it is time for the new councils to get down to work.
SLIGHTLY ASKEW | Some fowl deeds
I can't help thinking that even the most avid of ornithologists would have to agree that birds have a nasty streak. Otherwise, how could anything be that enthusiastic at such ungodly hours?
GRAINS OF SAND | Spam, anyone?
When we opened our email-mail service this morning, we received the following message:
Guest opinion: We must be literate
Can literacy be a defining national issue? My colleague, Ed Doherty, minister of post-secondary education, training and labour, and I spent two days with hundreds of people who believe it can — and must. The Council of Ministers of Education, Canada (CMEC) hosted a literacy summit this week, linking 3,500 participants in 10 cities across Canada.

Dalhousie mayor Clem Tremblay got some pointers on making bannock from Lacey Hope Barnaby of the Alaqsite’w Gitpu School in Listuguj. Lacey’s project was on Mi’gmaq heritage, for which she won the RBC Foundation Award for the Celebration of Aboriginal Heritage.

Take the municipal elections very seriously
Many citizens don't see their municipal councils as important as who represents them provincially or federally.
SLIGHTLY ASKEW
The other day... No, that's wrong. The other night, I had a dream in which I ended up playing with a gigantic panther as if it were a kitten. This is supposed to have some hidden meaning.
GRAINS OF SAND
In writing this column over the years I have always adhered to a non-political policy. By that I mean that, while I may very well comment upon government decisions and programs that I feel need consideration (either positively or negatively), I have never endorsed either a political party or an individual candidate — at least not as I can remember.
Cadets enjoyed shirts
Cadets, officers, and civilian instructors were on the receiving end of a considerable gift recently.
More on language issues
I would like to have the opportunity to respond to a previous "view" printed on April 30th. First I would like to put a few facts straight, being a bilingual francophone. The author of the article wrote: "All you have to do is go back to the seventies and eighties when school had their own program that didn't cost anything" and this is where I want to put the emphasis on "we came out of school knowing a second language".
Dislikes changes in fishing rules
Local inshore fisherman are angry with DFO for having a major change in closure to certain areas of our fishing grounds within the herring fishery 2008 regulations that causes fisherman stress to their livelihoods and a possible danger to their lives as well as their helpers.
Unhappy with man's death
On April 25, I was watching ATV news and the there was a report on of an elderly man from Baie Ste. Anne, who ultimately died due to in part by NB Power disconnecting his electricity even though they have a "no disconnect" policy during the winter months. This man was insulin dependent and along with hypothermia with no heat led to his death in the hospital five days later.
Editorial Comment: The Madawaska Mafia vs. Weather Girl Man
It should seem obvious that nobody should get into politics who doesn’t have a thick skin. It isn’t a job for the sensitive. Most who lack the skin of an elephant when it comes to verbal abuse usually don’t make it past the candidate selection process, letalone get a seat in the Legislature.
GRAINS OF SAND | The annual miracle of April
I have just come in from the back yard. It is getting dark and I want to write this column while the impressions are still fresh, and before I begin to get tired enough so that its writing becomes a chore.
SLIGHTLY ASKEW | It's the thought that counts
Sometimes, when seeking inspiration for this column, I simply sit and let my mind wander. As a result, random thoughts go meandering through the labyrinth that is my brain. Most of them are rejected. They just wouldn't work. But why shouldn't I share some of those rejected ideas with you? Here are a few:
