This isn't Nazi Germany

[Re: Article Surprise RCMP roadblocks: Motorists lose their smokes Oct. 1] I really have to question the constitutionality of this whole fishing expedition by the RCMP and the Department of Finance. Have Canadians forgotten their rights or are they simply not aware of them in the first place? Section 8 of our Charter of Rights and Freedoms states: Everyone has the right to be secure against unreasonable search or seizure.

It certainly seems unreasonable that every vehicle travelling that stretch of highway was a suspect. This wasn't a typical roadblock where RCMP were checking vehicle registrations, inspections, seatbelts, etc. which is well within the law. What makes this scenario any different than RCMP going door to door searching for tobacco, illegal game, drugs, etc.?

. This is Canada. Our soldiers fought two world wars to prevent this from happening in our country. For your reference, our Charter of Rights and Freedoms can be found on the Government of Canada's website: http://laws.justice.gc.ca/en/charter/

Know your rights!

Our online poll on our website, www.tribunenb.ca, asked the question: "Do you think that the RCMP is right to set up roadblocks on the highway to check passing vehicles for illegal cigarettes?" As of Monday night, the answers were Yes: 69 votes (39.7 per cent); No: 93 votes (53.4 per cent); Don't know: 4 votes (2.3 per cent); Don't care: 8 votes (4.6 per cent). Total votes: 174]

Every one of those caught should fight this in court!! They have no right to search private property like this. Imagine what's next!

I think the title for this is right on; this isn't Nazi Germany, nor does the situation at hand warrant such a comparison.

i think its silly that someone can be charged criminally for going to QC and buying a pack of cigarettes and coming home and being charged for having it. i used to make beer runs to quebec all the time. i dont know cause i rarely drink and i surely dont want to get a fine for going over there and buying booze..... like this province doesnt make enough money on peoples taxes!

The RCMP in northern NB are probably so BORED out of their mind that they are trying to make work. If the liquor industry notices people going to another province to buy, then maybe they should look at making their prices more competitive and also carry the popular quebec brands...

Just a thought

Keep up the good work RCMP, as long as you are looking for things related to Motor Vehicle operation, and since contraband cigs are illegal and portable, I see not what any law abiding citizen would fear!! The amount of time lost in such roadblocks is extremely minimal so that is not a problem unless you don't have current & valid permits, etc, or are on-the-run from the law!!

Those who spout the Charter and feel a wronged, then challenge the constitutionality of the Charter OFFICIALLY!! If you won't take action then 'Stop mouthing' about the Charter unless you are an expert in the field and 'prove' you are correct where it counts the most -- in Court!! That is the only way you can 'prove' the RCMP is acting illegally!!!

Of course they are seizing and giving big fines for smokes. They need our money from the fines, and our tax dollars to pay for the cruisers they wreck chasing people miles in the woods. Last time I saw a police car chase someone for miles in the woods on a dirt road was the last time I watched the "Dukes of Hazzard". Mounties, all right. They should be mounted on donkeys.
