Atholville’s Paul Doucet celebrating 50 years as a barber

He’s been northern New Brunswick’s friendly neighbourhood barber for five decades.
Paul Doucet of Atholville has cut literally thousands of heads of hair during his 50 years in his chosen profession, a legacy which has endeared him to clients of all ages and walks of life.
The longtime businessman, who owns and operates Paul’s Barber Shop in the village, will celebrate 50 years as a barber this week.
The walk-in shop is a busy place, as Doucet and his staff work hard every day to make sure its clients are made to feel welcome and treated with a smile and a laugh while getting the last hairstyle, or a trim.
Doucet’s career as a barber began when he was in his teens.
He started in the Doucet et Freres family haircutting business on March 18, 1958 at their former location on Water Street in Campbellton.
“The last 50 years…well, it’s like a dream,” says the 67-year-old. “I began as a barber when I was only 17 and the years have just flown by. It seems like yesterday when I started, and here I am - 50 years later - being interviewed by The Tribune about it.”
He says many of his clients are regular customers who have been coming to him either since he began his career as a barber, including many, since 1972, when he first opened his shop in Atholville.
“In our business, you have to rely on your customers - who I owe so much too,” he says. “In one family, four generations have come here. I’m hoping for five generations soon. I thank everyone who has come to me, and my shop, over the years. I couldn’t have done it without them.”
Doucet’s shop in Atholville is also a family business, as his talented staff includes two of his daughters - who he says will most likely take over the business when he steps down for good.
“I still enjoy what I do,” Doucet says. “Hair styles come and go, from long to short and back again, but people don’t change that much. People come to me for a haircut for many reasons - be it a wedding, or a family event, or before a vacation.”
Doucet’s shop is a popular stop for many people in the community and beyond, as it has won several Tribune Reader’s Choice awards in celebration of the quality service provided there.
Doucet added he still believes his profession is a good one to get into, “because if you love cutting hair for a living, you can meet, and serve, some great people like I do here in Atholville.”
“Thank you to all my loyal customers!”

There is a lesson here for the 'younger' people just starting out in life -- time does fly fast!!! Make the best of your time because all of sudden you too will be saying "50 years, where did it go"!!
It is funny 50 years seems like an eternity when you are 20; but 20 years when you are 65 seems like a 'flash of lightening!! Don't waste life be it a barber or hairdresser or a doctor, we all have the same general time on this planet!!
