
Duivenvoorden remains mayor

Belledune - Mayor Nick Duivenvoorden of Belledune emerged victorious in Monday night’s mayoralty race, beating outspoken Deputy Mayor Ron Bourque 671 to 370.
The two had sparred in the past over sometime differing views of how the village should be governed.
Duivenvoorden, a dairy farmer, will lead a council with new faces.
In Ward 1, with two councillors, incumbent Councillor Michael J. Firlotte went down to defeat, gathering only 202 votes to Paul J. Daley's 313 and Elaine Leveque-Godin's 393. Bringing up the rear was Lloyd Hayward with 145 votes.
In Ward 2, Mario Alexander Lapointe won with 68 votes, over Paul C. Legacy with 62 and Barry W. Noel with 52.
In Ward 3, with two councillors, Jerry G. Guitard won with 149 votes, followed by incumbent Mary Emma "Emmie" Flanagan with 141 votes. Regan Landry had 120 votes and Michael J. Carrier, 61.
There were 1,049 ballots cast out of a total 1,461 eligible voters for a voting turnout of 71.80 per cent.
