Bruce is back!
Campbellton - A familiar face will be returning to Campbellton city hall.
Bruce MacIntosh will be the mayor of Campbellton for the next four years, after he defeated his opponent, Councillor Christian Mercier, by a tally of 2,098 to 1,417.
It is a return to the position for MacIntosh, who with his wife Lynne is the owner and operator of the successful Upper Deck Restaurant. He served as a councillor for three years prior to first being elected mayor in 1986. He then served as mayor for twelve years before being defeated by the late Fernand Dube in 1998, but won the mayoralty in a by-election after Dube died while in office. MacIntosh lost to Mark Ramsay in the next two elections before Monday night's return.
MacIntosh said he was thrilled to once again be in the position to represent the city.
"Obviously I am very happy that the people of Campbellton have chosen me to be their representative. We've been hearing over the last few weeks nothing but positive comments and I'm looking forward to sitting down with this new council and getting to work on the issues that are before us."
MacIntosh said the first order of business would be getting to work on finding a solution for the financial difficulties of the Civic Centre.
"I want an audit done as soon as possible on the Civic Centre and try to find a way to end the negativity about that building."
As for why he won?
"Experience. People know that when I was mayor we were able to get a lot of things done and I think they realize that will continue. We were successful then and will be for the next four years."
In an earlier interview with The Tribune, MacIntosh pledged to seek more funding for Campbellton in the corridors of power in Fredericton, to lower the city's property tax rate, and to bring the Campbellton Regional Memorial Civic Centre under tighter control.
Not long after the results were known, his opponent dropped by to concede the election and offer his congratulations. Mercier, like MacIntosh, had wanted a closer examination of the Civic Centre operations.
There were 6,135 eligible voters in Campbellton with only 3,585 turning out to cast a ballot, for a turnout of 58.4 per cent.
Serving with MacIntosh will be realtor and Chamber of Commerce president Greg Davis who collected a whopping 2,524 votes, Stephanie Anglehart (2,191), Diane Cyr (2,093), incumbent Sterling "Fuzzy" Loga (1,756), incumbent Gilbert Cyr (1,544) and incumbent Denis Turcotte (1,511).
Defeated was incumbent Gary "Papa" Parker with 1,432 votes — another candidate who wanted an audit of the Civic Centre's operations. Other unsucessful candidates for the six seats on city council were David Ferguson (1,310), Howard Haley (1,261), Troy LeBrun (1,053), Quentin Mann (512) and Albert Montefrisco (350).
Incumbent mayor Mark Ramsay did not reoffer, nor did Deputy Mayor John Hello.
The new council will be sworn in on May 27.

I'm very curious to see if Mayor MacIntosh can dig his way out of the Civic Center hole that he dug himself and the community into in the first place... I'm not very optimistic about the prospect.
Bruce you know what to expect going back into Office, do the best you can for the City of Campbellton. There will always be 'naysayers' in the mix as you well know.
First thing you should do is to give MLA Roy Boudreau a mighty shake to wake him up to realize Campbellton 'sits on the shores of the Restigouche River' not the Bay of Chaleur as the PNB Tourism website states!! I brought this to Boudreau's attention via e-mail (which he received) but he has never had the courteousy to reply. If Boudreau can't look out for Campbellton then he should be shoved aside by voters to ensure the Campbellton representation is 'first and foremost'!! He should make certain Campbellton is properly & accurately presented to the public.
