Balmoral opposes new Bathurst airport

Balmoral - The Village of Balmoral opposes the construction of a new airport in the Bathurst region, Mayor Hebert Arseneault said in a press release.
Northern New Brunswick already possesses a quality airport infrastructure in Charlo, he said. It is only 75 kms from Bathurst, and was constructed in the 1970s to take jets as large as 737s according to Transport Canada standards. The airport still has a role to play in the economic and social development of northern New Brunswick and the Gaspe.
With a minimal investment, compared to the exorbitant costs of building a new airport in Bathurst, Arseneault said, Charlo Airport again fulfill this role. It is a good time for our governments, he said, to take the logical and strategic decision to assure the survival of rural regions like our own. The federal and provincial governments should do this, Arseneault argues, by building on existing infrastructure rather than wasting money building duplication.
