Traditional Xmas parade gets new twist

DALHOUSIE - Dalhousie's Christmas Parade of Lights, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 5, will see some changes this year.
"Something new this year, we're inviting people to bring donations for the food bank," said Eileen Walsh, coordinator of the Dalhousie BIAC, which organizes the annual parade.
Katimavik volunteers will be pushing grocery carts along the parade route. People are asked to put food donations into the carts and they'll be delivered to the Dalhousie food bank.
Walsh said that there will be three school floats this year: one each from Dalhousie Regional High School, Ecole aux Quatre Vents and Academie Notre Dame. Along with some of the traditional entries, there'll be ones from Eel River Crossing and Campbellton. Walsh said that there would be another new one, but would not say who it would represent. (She likes to have a few surprises.)
She said that the Dalhousie Air Cadets will certainly be there as long as the weather cooperates and is good enough for the band to play. Of course, the BIAC will welcome any additional entries. Those wishing to take part can call 684-7612.
There'll be trophies for the best commercial, non-commercial and school entries.
The parade will start from George St. and run east along William to Renfrew St. Following the parade, people are invited to Rotary Memorial Park, where Santa and Mrs. Claus will greet everyone, especially the children. This year, they'll be receiving kids on the steps of the town hall. At the park, there'll be the traditional bonfire, hot chocolate and music.
"We hope everyone will come to see the parade and meet Santa," Walsh said. "It's the start of the holiday season in Dalhousie and we want everyone to be in the Christmas mood."
