Former Tigers claim MJAHL title

Yarmouth - Four members of the Yarmouth Mariners who had once called Campbellton home have won the Maritime Junior A Hockey League championship.

Alexandre Soucy paced the former players with seven assists in the championship round and finished tied for third in the playoff scoring race with 19 points on four goals and 15 assists in 16 games.

Cody Lefrancois had four goals and four assists in 16 games, including the game winner April 17 in Woodstock that clinched the Mariners' first title over the Slammers. Seldom used Tyler Williams had two goals in 15 games.

Jocelyne Morrissette picked up a win and a tie in splitting playing time in goal, before Dallas Ungurian got the call for the final two games of the series.

With the win Yarmouth advanced to the Fred Page Cup, the Eastern Canadian Junior Hockey Championship in New Glasgow, NS.

The Mariners took on the Sherbrooke College Champlain Cougars, the Quebec champions, in the opening round April 23 thumping them 7-4. Soucy recorded three assists while Lafrancois added a single helper.

The second game for the Mariners was April 25, where they took on the Pembroke Lumber Kings with the Lumber Kings scoring an overtime 3-2 win. No former Tigers recorded a point and Morrissette had still not played in goal. Soucy was again a stand out in the Mariners' third game, recording an assist in being named player of the game. Lefrancois chipped in with a lone goal while Williams added a goal and an assist in a 6-4 loss to the host Weeks Crushers. Morrissette got his first start in more than two weeks and made 35 saves in taking the loss.

The two teams squared off in the semi-finals, won 4-2 by the Crushers who rebounded with three unanswered goals in the third period. Lefrancois had a lone assist. The Crushers rebounded from a 7-1 loss to the Pembroke Lumber Kings in the first game of the Fred Page Cup with a 4-1 win in the championship final of the Lumber Kings.

The Crushers now advance to the Canadian Junior A Championship, the Royal Bank Cup, in Cornwall, On. May 3-11.
