Comets Conclude successful season

Campbellton - The Restigouche Comets Speed Skating Club recently wrapped up its most successful season in its young existence with many noteworthy highlights. Registration reached an all time high since skating was brought back to the region eight years ago.
The club also expanded its training base to include training out of both the Campbellton Civic Centre and Dalhousie’s Inch Arran Ice Palace.
The biggest accomplishment, however, came on the ice where skaters made their mark on the provincial, Atlantic and national level. The Comets had 13 skaters compete on the competitive circuit with tremendous success. With fourteen Provincial Age Class Championships up for grabs, Alexandre Ouellette, Anthony Gagnon and Brady Oakes were all crowned New Brunswick Champions in their respective categories.
The Comets have now claimed six provincial crowns in the past three years. Two other competitors, Zoe LeBlanc and Carl Landry Berthelot, finished second overall. Provincially the Comets also had four of the fastest six skaters in the Bantam Category.
The Comets also placed two skaters on the provincial team at the nationals that were held in Sherbrooke, Quebec.
LeBlanc had an outstanding competition in leading the provincial juvenile girls delegation.
She lowered all of her personal best times in every distance by at least two seconds, placed fourth in the 777m, eighth overall in Canada, and led her team to a relay bronze medal.
In addition to his provincial and Maritime crown, Brady Oakes was the only midget skater from Atlantic Canada to qualify for the Canadian Championships.
Unfortunately, a broken ankle sustained in practice forced him out of the competition.
Although the Comets have concluded their season, they have already begun planning for next season. They hope to attract new skaters to the fastest sport on ice and will be at Promotion Plus this weekend to answer any questions about their club.
