Only two Canadians made this team, the other being a girl in Ontario. Marcoux is known for his ability in a number of sports, but it was his fencing skills that earned him this rare opportunity.

He has won over 80 fencing medals; in fact, he's ranked third in Canada.

Marcoux is very excited about his trip. "I am very happy that I will be traveling to China to take part in this event. I am proud that I am the only person from New Brunswick who got accepted to this team," he said.

While in China, he won't actually take part in any sports competitions but instead will observe and get the feel of what's happening during the Olympics. " I am just going to experience the game," he said.

Marcoux said that this was something he has always wanted to do. "Ever since the 2003 Winter Games, I have hoped that I would be able to take part in a event like this. "I told myself that I would do it and now I am," he said.

Sports is very important to him but he's also serious about his education.

"Education is important to me," he said. " I would like to finish my education then become a doctor."

He said he is very excited about his trip and can't wait to arrive in China and start to enjoy this experience of a life time. He leaves on August 1. The trip is completely paid for and he will just have to bring spending money.

Marcoux is the son of Jann and Michel Marcoux of Balmoral.
