Charlo - The first event of the 2008-2009 cross-country skiing and bialthon season at Les Aventuriers Cross-Country Ski Club in Charlo is set to go this weekend.
On Saturday from 1-4 p.m., the chalet will be the site of the season kickoff, where members and non-members are invited to come and renew friendships and prepare for the upcoming season. It's hoped that enough snow will fall by Saturday to allow for some skiing as well.
The club has a busy winter planned with events being held every month. Two major championships are planned for Charlo, the provincial cadet championships in February as well as the eastern biathlon championships in March.
"Our ski club is one of the top three places in Canada to do cross-country skiing and biathlon," said one of LA's main advocates Chastity Degroot. "We rent the chalet during off season through Heron's Nest Cottages as well. For a second year we have snow shoeing trails. Although our club has elite athletes and has hosted many elite events, it is open to all ages and abilities!
"Our over 200 members consist of people ages 5-85 years old. We have 5km of lit trails and we rent new equipment at a reasonable price."
